OLD MAN RANT #1

Hey. When did people stop learning how to be courteous about waiting in line? Or, better yet, realizing that people are in line ahead of them and then waiting?

I've had many incidents in the last year with people just walking right past a line and going ahead of others already waiting (myself included as one of those waiting). I confronted one a while back and was accused of being a racist. All is said was, "You do realize that all of us were waiting in line here before you?"

C'mon. Let's try to be nice to each other and find some common decency and courtesy for the new year.

Now, the old man part:
I think that some of this behavior comes from less structure in school that allows people to become even more self-obsessed than they would be otherwise. Too many "entitled" acting folks going around. Most are young.

The older people who behave that way are just jerks. They have no other excuse.

Wow. Two negative posts in a row. What a way to end a year!!!!!!

I'll be in Lacoste by Monday, so more to come ... from FRANCE!!

  1. I hate getting cut. It's the worst. Common courtesy in America is something so unbelievably rare nowadays. It's really sad.

We'll miss you Tom! See you spring quarter! :)

  2. Any chance of getting you to do a commission in 2010?:-)

Regardless, please have a safe, prosperous, and Happy New Year.

  3. Paulina-
Thanks. People are just plain self-absorbed to the point of "why are we here" sometimes. They don't acknowledge you or respond when you say hello ... or says "thanks" when you do something nice.
It's gotten to the point where I'm shocked when someone does something nice.
But ... not so shocked that I can't wave or say thanks.

I'll miss seeing you this quarter. Good luck to both you and Kendall. Do you have any interest in sending those pages to Marvel? You should. They have a new submissions editor. I can give you his contact info.

    Take care.

  4. Damon-
I'm out of the country teaching for SCAD in France until March, but I might do some commissions when I get back.
Email me at tlyle49@comcast.net in mid-March and let's see what we can do since you've been so patient.

    Happy New Year.

  5. Maybe people in France won't display this type of behavior.

Good luck this quarter, I'll miss your guidance.

  6. I take it that this person was not white since the racists comment. I had to take a sensitivity class at a place I worked once that emphasized we have to accept that behavior because it is part of "their" culture. BS, I say! It's not part of our culture which they are a part of. Something is wrong with that thinking.

  7. Actually, I was yelled at by two people that day. The first was a black woman, but the second was white. They were both just rude.

"Racist" is an easy dodge and you can slam somebody with it and skate ... or so they hope.

Bad thinking happens in all races.

    So, unfortunately, does rudeness.

    Take care all.

  8. I completely agree with that. I am much more surprised when someone does something nice, is polite or friendly. Although when it does happen, it tends to make my day. Since it is so incredibly rare.

Yes! I definitely want to send those pages. I was going to email you about it over break but my computer crashed and I lost aallll my files. Including the scans of my pages, sad. So I'll have to rescan them since I'm finally back in Savannah. Would you mind if I emailed you? I know you'll be incredibly busy in Lacoste. Just let me know.

    Enjoy the snow!
